The Office of Radiaton Protection and Environmental Monitoirng (ORM) is responsible for ensuring that people and the environment in Ireland are protected from the harmful effects of ionising radiation. It is also the national competent authority for the implementation of all Irish and EU ambient air quality legislation.
The ORM fulfills its remit by providing strong and effective regulation of all those who use radiation sources and by working in partnership with other organisations and regulatory authorities.
The ORM manages the national radiation and air quality monitoring networks and provides information and advice to the public, the Government and other stakeholders on radiation levels and air quality and their implications for health. The ORM has a central role in ensuring Ireland’s emergency preparedness in the event of a nuclear accident abroad and is responsible for monitoring developments in relation to nuclear installations abroad.
