Project Abstract

Native oysters Ostrea edulis are a keystone species that create complex habitats, enhance biodiversity, and provide ecosystem services. However, overexploitation has led to their decline across their historical range. Under the current climate and biodiversity crisis there is a drive to restore and enhance marine habitats, with projects across Europe focusing on native oysters. The degraded status of native oyster habitats throughout most of the range, along with a lack of genetic data, means a comprehensive understanding of the genetic diversity and connectivity between existing oyster populations is lacking. While in Ireland large oyster beds in the east coast have disappeared, some populations remain in the west offering a unique opportunity to gauge their connectivity and genetic diversity. In collaboration with dars na Gaeltachta and the Marine Institute this project will sample extant natural oyster beds in Kilkieran and Bertraghboy Bays, in Connemara (Co. Galway), and document their genetic structure and connectivity. Adult samples will be collected from extant beds to establish population structure, recruitment and genetic diversity. Oyster larvae will be collected using standard plankton tows along with eDNA samples from the water column to determine genetic connectivity between the two beds along with other populations in Galway Bay. This project offers a unique opportunity to provide valuable information to managers and regulators for sustainable management, bed rejuvenation and provision of much needed evidence that could be used in oyster restoration sites where oysters have disappeared.
