Project Abstract
In an effort to combat greenhouse gas emissions, the generation of wind energy has become a cornerstone in renewable energy production worldwide. Despite this, there remains a paucity of information not just on the potential impacts of offshore wind farm development on Irish bats, but the extent to which bats migrate over open marine waters to and from Ireland in the first place. This knowledge gap is alarming, as studies worldwide have demonstrated that wind farms can cause high instances of bat mortality, particularly for migratory species. Consequently, our research will concentrate on two migratory bat species native to Ireland, the Nathusius pipistrelle and Leislers bat. Our study aims to determine the extent of migration in Irish bats using genomics and stable isotope analysis. These complementary approaches will allow us to compare Irish bats with those in Britain and Europe in order to determine if there is significant movement of individuals between the land masses. This will ultimately form the basis of any subsequent mitigation measures which may need to be adopted in order to avoid any potential negative impacts of offshore wind energy infrastructure
on these protected species.
