Project Abstract

For Ireland to fully achieve its bioeconomy potential, an integrated pathway to market for new technologies, processes and products is needed. BioScaleUp proposes the demonstration of 6 innovative biobased technologies at the national multipurpose bioeconomy pilot facility at Lisheen Thurles. Operating for up to Technology readiness level (TRL) 7 the facility will function as a platform for the collaboration between RPOs, SMEs and large industry for process development & scale-up of biobased products and processes, enabling conversion of renewable feedstocks into biobased chemicals, biobased materials, food ingredients, biofuels and other bioproducts by using technologies: biomass pretreatment, biocatalysis, fermentation, and downstream product recovery and purification. BioScaleUp will: Enable scale-up of 6 technical innovations for the conversion of Dairy side streams (whey permeates and sludges), food waste and wood processing wastewater, producing sufficient quantities of prototype for product characterisation, product performance, formulation and market testing. Support and accelerate the development of biobased processes: interdisciplinary and intersectoral collaboration that drive new business opportunities for the just transition from a fossil to a biobased economy. Provide robust operational data at an appropriate (pilot) scale that enables industry to technically and economically assess opportunities and inform strategic decisions on new products, services and job creation. Leverage and exploit existing infrastructure at the Pilot scale facilities at Lisheen to complement the equipment we are seeking in this proposal. Establish research, training and educational needs, including access to finance expertise and financial actors, to meet short, medium- and long-term strategic needs of industry, RPOs, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders that are seeking to scale up and advance technologies to create new business opportunities for the region. Operate BioScaleUp using the best operational and financial models enabling project sustainability, based on the consortiums collective knowledge and experience in large national and International multistakeholder projects
