Project Abstract
No agreed protocols currently exist to measure, report and verify climate change adaption in the agri-food sector compromising the UNFCCC Parties (governments) ability to deploy evidence-based adaptation measures globally. To measure climate change resilience and adaptation, we aim to develop a Climate Change Adaptation Index (CAAI) representing how agri-food 'pixels' at ~ 10s m resolution are sensitive to climate perturbations. CAAI will be derived directly from the fusion of multiple earth observation (EO) timeseries data products using AI methodologies and constrained using specifically well defined climatic 'ground truth' instances. Our inter-disciplinary team involves experts in AI applications, EO data analysis, climate change, agriculture and food security, with excellent 'ground truth' information for our target partner country, Ethiopia. TAPAS will enable quantitative monitoring of climate adaptation and also provide a means of assessing model predictions against local reality demonstrating the impact of local adaptation interventions. As a breakthrough innovation, TAPAS will guide policy and interventions across UNFCCC Parties for climate change adaptation. The team members have extensive experience of working in disparate geographical locations and time zones, running within tightly defined research budgets, and adapting project management strategies and utilising communication systems to synchronize research for impact activities across multiple countries.
