Project Abstract

This proposed project aims to quantify and assess the impact of ammonia emissions from intensive agriculture (pig and poultry) units on SACs and SPAs in Ireland. The UCD/UWE Project Team (Dr Thomas Curran (Project Manager) and Prof Shane Ward, University College Dublin; Dr Enda Hayes and Dr Mark Everard, University of the West of England) are uniquely placed to bring our existing expertise and knowledge together to deliver this project in an innovative way while ensuring that the expected outputs are delivered in a measurable, replicable and efficient manner. An Advisory Board (up to 5 members including the funder) is envisaged, drawn from other academic institutions, government, and the private sector. It is proposed that a PhD student would be supported through this project enhancing the existing knowledge and capacity further. There are 6 Work Packages 1. Project Management 2. Understanding the current state of environment; 2. Establishing an emissions and ambient monitoring programme; 3. Data analysis and atmospheric dispersion modelling; 4. Ecological assessment of impact. 6. Dissemination. The EA screening distances for ammonia will be adopted so that four Priority 1-4 pig and poultry installations may be identified for further study and assessment in this project. Expected outputs are: Final Report, which will provide a clear and detailed account of all the steps and methodologies used during the project; Synthesis Report (20-30pp), which provides a clear non-technical summary of the research and of the recommendations; Dissemination 2-pager, also for inclusion on the EPA website; Advice notes on modelling and ecological assessment; Enhanced GIS inventory/database; Workshop/Dissemination event for all stakeholders; Dedicated website for the project; PhD thesis; 3 peer-reviewed publications and 2 conference presentations
