Project Abstract

The European Commission's Green Paper Adapting to Climate Change in Europe-options for EU action highlights the need for early action in implementing climate change adaptation strategies. It argues that such strategies, if acted on now, will bring about clear economic benefits and minimise the threats to ecosystems, health, economic development, property and infrastructure. This project addresses this need through a multidisciplinary integrated assessment of the drivers and impacts of climate change and the development of information systems and outreach tools which address priority adaptation areas. It employs an integrated framework, incorporating observation systems, previous research outputs, new analysis and modelling, to provide decision support tools and guidelines in support of cross-sectoral adaptation decision making, at local, regional and national level. It will also contribute to coordinated efforts at developing adaptation strategies at the EU level. Significant synergies exist within the sectors identified in the scope of the proposed project which can only be developed through such an integrated assessment approach. Significant outcomes from the project include the enhancement of national research capability in this area which will provide, on an integrated basis, information and analytical tools to support, test, and validate policy development and adaptive responses to climate change.
