Project Abstract
Covering more than 20% of Ireland's geographical area, peatlands are the country's greatest terrestrial carbon sink; yet, they are increasingly being harmed by draining, changing land use, and climatic extremes. The fragmented nature of current monitoring makes it difficult to take prompt action to stop these ecosystems from becoming major producers of carbon. We propose SMART-Sinks, an AI-powered environmental dataspace that combines multimodal information into a FAIR-compliant platform, including satellite images, in-situ sensors (hydrological, GHG fluxes), climate models, and land-use records. Real-time monitoring of peatland vitality (e.g., soil moisture, vegetation health) and carbon flux dynamics using explainable AI (XAI) models. Predictive analytics forecasting degradation risks, methane emissions, and biodiversity loss under future climate scenarios. A co-designed Decision Support System (DSS) delivering interactive dashboards, early-warning alerts, and rewetting scenario simulations for policymakers, land managers, and conservation agencies.
SMART-Sinks will be validated in Irish peatlands, filling important gaps in stakeholder usability, predictive capabilities, and data integration. It supports the goals of the EU Green Deal, Ireland's Climate Action Plan, and scalable applications for other ecosystems (including grasslands). At the national and EU levels, this approach promotes evidence-based peatland restoration, strengthens climate resilience, and protects carbon sequestration by converting disparate data into usable insight.
