Project Abstract

This report details the work carried out during theSmart Plant project (2005-AIC-MS-43-M4). As part ofthis research an autonomous platform for monitoringgreenhouse gases (methane (CH4) carbon dioxide(CO2)) has been developed prototyped and fieldvalidated. The modular design employed means thatthe platform can be readily adapted for a variety ofapplications involving these and other target gasessuch as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) ammonia (NH3) andcarbon monoxide (CO) and the authors are in theprocess of completing several short demonstratorprojects to illustrate the potential of the platform forsome of these applications. The field validation for thegreenhouse gas monitoring platform was carried out attwo landfill sites in Ireland. The unit was used tomonitor the concentration of CO2 and CH4 gases atperimeter borehole wells. The final prototype wasdeployed for over 4 months and successfully extractedsamples from the assigned perimeter borehole wellheadspace measured them and sent the data to adatabase via a global system for mobile (GSM)communications. The data were represented via anupdating graph in a web interface. Sampling wascarried out twice per day giving a 60-fold increase oncurrent monitoring procedures which provide one gasconcentration measurement per month.
