Project Abstract

Several antisense drugs (chemically modified RNA/DNA which downregulate specific disease-related genes) will shortly gain approval for medical use. Their unique manufacturing routes and bioactivity raises unique unaddressed environmental issues. This project seeks to establish the environmental impacts associated with the product lifecycle of an antisense therapy and to develop technical methodologies to evaluate and treat specific manufacturing waste streams rendering them free of active antisense product. It will broaden the Irish environmental research base generate environmental expertise in this cutting edge area and provide a framework to assist environmental agency personnel in the formulation of BREF documentation for antisense-based pharmaceutical manufacturing.
