Project Abstract

The proposed project will study the implications of alternative policy targets and policy instrument choices on greenhouse gas emissions and the economic performance of Ireland. In particular, it will develop scenarios of greenhouse gas emissions in Ireland without additional climate policy and evaluate the economic, sectoral and environmental implications of current Irish climate policy and the proliferation of policy targets. The project will also assess the choice between absolute emission targets and emission intensity targets. Furthermore, we will conduct three case studies of the effects of past climate policy, one on the effects of carbon taxes in OECD countries, another on the effects of the EU-ETS on investment behaviour, and a third on the effects of the Power of One campaign. The results will be submitted to learned journals and discussed with stakeholders in Ireland.
