Project Abstract

Reports from the University of Bristol (UB) UK and theClean Technology Centre (CTC) Cork Ireland havebeen provided on the emission inventories for HFCsPFCs and SF6 from Ireland.LS-5.1.3aUsing a i?topi-downi? approach the University of Bristolbased the project on statistics previously collected andresults from a transport/dispersion model (i?NAMEi?)created by the Meteorological Office in the UK. NAMEis a Lagrangian particle model that uses three hourlythree-dimensional meteorology fields from the UnifiedModel (a compilation of atmospheric and oceanicmodelling software) in order to abstract particles aroundthe model domain. The project therefore compares andcontrasts emission values calculated conventionallyagainst those derived from the statistical analysis ofemissions calculated at Mace Head monitoring stationand back trajectories using the NAME model.LS-5.1.3bCTC using a i?bottomi-upi? approach based the projecton the results of extensive data gathering through contactwith relevant gas manufacturers distributors users andretail outlets in Ireland and abroad. Through thisapproach CTC determined that although HFC and PFCproduction does not occur in Ireland the consumption ofhalocarbons and SF6 does. CTC used a number ofproduction and consumption categories in order todetermine a speciated breakdown of gas emissions withinIreland. The focus of these studies is on chemical species HFC-134a HFC-125 HFC-152a HFC-143a HFC-227eaPFC-14 &116 and SF6. As shown in Table 1 overleafvalues for HFC-134a are comparable with that calculatedby UB and the NAME model. However the valueestimated by CTC for the same species is significantlylower. In the case of HFC-125 there is a greater degree ofagreement between the value estimated by UB and thatestimated by CTC.HFC-152a was not estimated by CTC in connection withthe present project. The values for HFC-143a estimatedby UB and CTC are in the same general range and aretherefore comparable for purposes of this study. This isalso the case for the estimation of HFC-227ea.A combined total UB value of 3.2 t is estimated forspecies PFC-14 and 116 which fits within the estimatedCTC range for the same species of 1.0i-7.4 t combined. The value for SF6 estimated by UB covers only emissionsfrom gas-insulated switchgear. If additional uses (notcovered by the UB study) are included in the totalestimates of SF6 values estimated by UB and CTC arenearly exact.
