Project Abstract

The aims of this study are to build on previous knowledge and to: (1) undertake a thorough literature review of the latest research in this field. (2) Investigate, under controlled conditions in the laboratory, the impact of radon membranes and hardcore on the effectiveness of the radon sump. (3) Conduct on site measurements in typical Irish build types and collate trends in radon reduction methods and compare the data with measurements made by international collaborators. (4) Inform the EPA of the results of 2 & 3 above which will influence any potential amendments to the Building Regulations and also feed into the training of building professionals. (5) Disseminate the work widely by presenting and publishing the work nationally and internationally. Disseminate the work in the media and at workshops and forums such as the Galway Science & Technology festival (one of the biggest events of its type in Europe with over 25,000 attendees). This project will broaden the knowledge base of work in this area, create synergies, and will foster new collaborations and research links into the future. The target audience will be: county and city council employees, Office of Radiological Protection in the EPA, policy makers, academics, building professionals & radon mitigation contractors, and the general public. Through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at conferences the project will be showcased on a national and international scale. It is proposed to deliver least one CPD talk (e.g. through Engineers Ireland) for construction professions. Non-peer reviewed publicity will include articles, website, and targeting radio and TV features. The PI is also a committee member of the Galway Science and Technology forum (now in its 16th year) which hosts outreach events annually in more than 200 schools. The Galway Science & Technology festival concludes with an exhibition day every November which attracts in excess of 25,000 attendees (http://www.galwayscience.ie) and will be an ideal forum to highlight this important research and generate significant public awareness of this substantial public health issue.
