Project Abstract

There is major uncertainty in the estimates of carbon storage in soils due to significant losses of carbon via ground water. Land use and management will influence ground water carbon losses but they are rarely quantified and direct comparisons between land-uses have not been made. To address these uncertainties we will measure ground water carbon losses for three of Irelandis major land use categories arable grassland and forest as well as examining the influence of different land management systems. By utilizing ongoing measurements of carbon dioxide exchange we will provide an improved assessment of carbon sequestration potential of managed ecosystems.
