Project Abstract

The first aim of this project is to synthesise, purify and characterise the main metabolites (human, veterinary and environmental) of two very widely used and important classes of antibiotics, i.e. fluoroquinolones and sulfa drugs. The second aim is to expose a number of clinically important bacterial species to these antibiotic metabolites, where the bacteria chosen are susceptible to the original antibiotics, and then determine if any of the synthesised metabolites generate bacterial resistance to the parent antibiotic. The results obtained could have far-reaching consequences for wastewater treatment in general, especially for the removal of both antibiotics and their many metabolites from water, both in Ireland and throughout the world.
