Project Abstract

Maritime transport is fundamental in international logistics with ports acting as a facilitator of economic growth between regions and countries. With increased globalisation and containerisation, international sea trade is expanding. While maritime transport is regarded as an environmentally-friendly mode of transport in terms of emissions, given the share of maritime transport in total world trade, its impacts on the environment are not negligible (Lim et al., 2019). The extension of port infrastructure to accommodate increasing demand for transport services and larger vessels and containers, has resulted in significant negative environmental impacts i.e. reduced air quality, increase in noise, biodiversity loss and water pollution (Winnes et al., 2015). Consequently, ports face increased demands for sustainability. SHIP represents an innovative approach to the sustainable management of Irish ports. The project aims to develop a framework of sustainable port practices to facilitate implementation of port policy. As recent research indicates, the complex nature of ports and the diverse range of activities and stakeholders involved can make policy-making challenging. By using a state-of-the-art review of literature; international best practice; action research ; and innovative experimentation in technology and managerial practices, SHIP will develop a novel and transformative framework to advance port sustainability in Ireland. SHIP will produce: 5 academic papers. These will be targeted at both a national and international audience and will be submitted to high impact journals in the area of marine and coastal governance. 6 working papers and one final project report which will be aimed at policy makers and port and shipping mangers. 1 research symposium and associated report that will partly focus on developing transition capacity building for those involved in port and shipping.
