Project Abstract

Biorefineries offer the potential for the production of high-value chemicals and fuels from waste biomass feedstocks. In order to predict the relative value of the various feedstocks in biorefineries it is necessary to know, in detail, their chemical components. Such data are critically lacking in Ireland. Using data from previous studies, the research will collect representative samples of biomass waste from the participants outlined and conduct laboratory analysis of all waste fractions. The results of this comprehensive analysis will inform a desk-based evaluation of the extent to which waste can economically and sustainably be used in biorefineries. The relative merits of this end-use will be compared with existing mechanisms for waste treatment. There will be papers published on both the lab and desk work. Updates will be provided every three months to all participants. If more profitable mechanisms for dealing with waste than those currently employed are found, the participants may change their waste strategies. Relevant data will be freely published on the Applicant?s website (launching February 2008) where there are no conflicts with participant interests. The report will inform what biomass technologies are considered for Ireland, will reduce the uncertainties and risks currently associated with the poor classification of wastes, and will benefit the development of other research projects involving the pyrolysis of biomass and subsequent analysis of the char produced.
