The European Commission recently adopted the Thematic Strategy for soil protection and one strand of this intends to assess the effect of climate change on soil organic matter. Other international legislation, including the Kyoto Protocol and the Habitats Directive, are important with regard to peatland, peatland condition and the peatland SOC stock. The objectives of this study are; to classify peatland disturbance, enabling the accurate identification and mapping of the severity of disturbance and examine the effect that disturbance and climate change may have on the peatland SOC stock.
