Research 490: Importance of Physico-chemical Cycling of Nutrients and Carbon in Marine Transitional Zones (Nuts & Bolts)

Authors: Peter Croot, Rachel Cave, Sheena Fennell, Maija Heller, Tiernan Henry, Nadeeka Rathnayake, Fatimatuj Zohara Sonny and Dagmar Stengel, August 2025

Year: 2025

Marine transitional zones (MTZs) serve as important material filters in the transfer of elements and chemical species from land to sea. Through physico-chemical and biological processes, nutrients and trace metals are either removed or chemically altered within MTZs, resulting in a reduced flux of materials to the coastal zone. This research, led by a team from the University of Galway, aims to enhance our understanding of the impact of multiple environmental stressors on Irish MTZs. The study involves biogeochemical and bio-optical investigations at four characteristically different sites: the Shannon Estuary, Kinvara Bay, Lough Furnace, and Galway Bay. New data generated from this research will improve our ability to predict and model the effects of climate change and other anthropogenic stressors on good environmental status of MTZs. Additionally, the study provides essential environmental information to support decision-making related to the management and governance of Irish MTZs.

Report cover for evidence based targeting of agricultural measures to reduce N in catchments

Evidence-based targeting of agricultural measures to reduce nitrogen in catchments to achieve water quality objectives

Year: 2025

This report outlines three updates to the evidence base to support targeting the right measures in the right place to improve water quality. The first update is the assessment of the catchments that need nitrogen load reductions to support good estuarine ecological conditions which incorporates more recent monitoring data since first reported by the EPA in 2021, and some improvements to the assessment methodology. The second update follows the same methodology to look back at changes in the reductions required over a 35-year period since 1990 at representative monitoring stations. Thirdly, the on-line mapping tool for the Farm and Landscape measures for Agriculture (FLAG) map (previously the Targeting Agricultural Measures map) has also been updated with monitoring data up to 2024, along with the other multiple lines of evidence used to indicate where agricultural measures are needed to restore water quality.

Quarterly Greenhouse Gas Emissions Indicator Report 2025 Quarter 1

Year: 2025

This is the fifth EPA report in a new series of quarterly greenhouse gas emissions for Ireland to support more frequent monitoring of national and sectoral progress on climate action. This series complements the national greenhouse gas inventory and projections prepared annually by the EPA. Emissions in Quarter 1 2025 were up by 2.9% on the same quarter last year. This was mainly driven by increased emissions in the agriculture sector (+8.7%) due to increased fertiliser sales, and the Electricity sector driven by a 4.1% increase in electricity generation from fossil fuels.
