Waste water treatment at 19 of Ireland's 172 large urban areas did not meet EU treatment standards in 2019. This includes Dublin, which is of particular concern because it produces almost half (44%) of Ireland’s urban waste water. In 2021 untreated waste water from 34 towns and villages is released into the environment each day. Substantial and sustained investment is required to upgrade waste water treatment systems, prevent pollution and protect public health.
