The Agency has prepared draft guidance on the management of stormwater at licensed sites. The new guidance will support better stormwater management and protection at licensed sites. It will also assist licensees in setting trigger values for stormwater discharges, a requirement in many industrial and waste licences. The EPA is now consulting with external parties on the draft guidance and welcomes any comments or questions that you may have. The draft guidance, and the spreadsheet of worked trigger level examples referenced therein, are available to download below. Please use the excel spreadsheet “Stormwater guidance consultation feedback form” which is available to download below to record your feedback. Email it to the EPA using the following email address: stormwaterguidance@epa.ie .Please do not use any other email address to submit your feedback. This will help us to more easily collate and consider all submissions. Consultation will close on the 13 June 2025.

This document provides a standardised approach and methodology for conducting and reporting risk assessments and risk management of public and private water supplies at the source. It ensures consistency in evaluations, facilitating regulatory oversight and Ireland’s reporting obligations to the European Commission, as required under the European Union (Drinking Water) Regulations 2023. The guidance includes Excel-based reporting templates for risk assessment and risk management, specifically for Public Water Supplies and Group Water Schemes (Annex 5) and Small Private Supplies (Annex 6). These templates are designed for use alongside the guidance and can be downloaded from this page.

With many of Irelands surface waters classed as less than the minimum of “good ecological status” under the Water Framework Directive, this research project looked to support optimal targeting and management of riparian margins, in agricultural contexts, for effective management of rivers in Ireland. It delivers a riparian measures database summarising alternative measures for Irish conditions, evaluating their effectiveness and wider ecosystem service benefits. Core to the research is the “Right Measure, Right Place” concept, a key tenet of Ireland’s River Basin Management Plan (2022–2027). Tools were developed to identify locations for maximum impact, using landscape context to prioritise 16 identified mitigation measures. The project aims to help policymakers and other research projects expand beyond traditional approaches to achieve water quality objectives under policies like the Common Agricultural Policy and Water Framework Directive.
