A radiation emergency is an incident or accident which has the potential to result in a worker or member of the public being exposed to elevated levels of ionising radiation.
Incidents that could be classified as radiation emergencies range across a wide spectrum, from nuclear explosions or accidents which have the potential to affect a wide area across international boundaries to minor spillages of radioactive materials.
The EPA works closely with the Government, international agencies, emergency services and licensed operators to ensure a rapid response to radiological emergencies.
