Public participation

 

Class 1 GMM activities/GMO activities:

There is no legislative provision for public participation with respect to Class 1 GMM activities or GMO activities.

Class 2 GMM activities:

On receipt of a Class 2 GMM application, the Agency may - at its own discretion - require the applicant to place an advertisement in a newspaper circulating in the area where the proposed activity is located, informing the public of the proposed activity and inviting representations from them. The format of such newspaper advertisements is set out in Article 22 of the GMO (Contained Use) Regulations S.I. No 73 of 2001. In accordance with Article 23 representations must be:

  • in writing
  • addressed to the Agency at its headquarters
  • made within a period of 4 weeks commencing the date of publication of the advertisement
  • accompanied by a fee of €10

Class 3 & Class 4 activities:

In accordance with Article 21 of the GMO Contained Use Regulations S.I. No 73 of 2001 an applicant proposing to carry out a Class 3 or Class 4 GMM contained use activity is required to place an advertisement in a newspaper circulating in the area of the proposed activity. This advertisement invites members of the public to make representations to the EPA in relation to the proposed Class 3/4 activity. The format of such newspaper advertisements is set out in Article 22 of the GMO (Contained Use) Regulations S.I. No 73 of 2001. In accordance with Article 23 representations must be:

  • in writing
  • addressed to the Agency at its headquarters
  • made within a period of 4 weeks commencing the date of publication of the advertisement
  • accompanied by a fee of €10
