Project Abstract

The hypothesis of SUSTAINBEEF is that cattle farming systems which rely mainly on grasslands and agro-industrial resources which are non-edible by humans are more sustainable than cattle production systemsthat use feedstuffs which could also be used as human food.Production systems will be selectedrepresentative of European regions differing in terms of (1) soil and climate potential to support food instead of forage production and (2) beef production from specialized beef breeds, dairy breeds and terminal crossbreeding on dairy breeds. Their actual and potential performances will be compared while mobilizing multidisciplinaryteams and bottom-up approaches. The objectives of the project are: To co-define a set of environmental, social and economic indicators to compare the sustainability of contrasted beef production systems, and, To co-define potential scenarios for the evolution of more sustainable cattle farming systems in the main EU beef production regions. These scenarios will be evaluated and, furthermore, suitable incentive measures to enhance their implementation will be tested and, when relevant, proposed. SUSTAINBEEF will contribute to achieving the objectives of the ERA-NET SusAn call in Research Area 2 and Research Area 3
