Project Abstract

The EPA has identified scope to improve communications with young people aged 13-25 years, in particular to increase engagement, create awareness and motivate behaviour. The ESRI’s BRU have considered the potential to apply methods from behavioural science to inform these communications and are of the opinion that it could be a fruitful avenue of research. While design of an awareness campaign would be better suited to those with marketing expertise, experimental methods could be used to diagnose issues with engagement, understanding or motivation in order to inform the direction of campaigns, subject to the identification of specific research questions. The development of research questions would benefit from identifying the key environmental issues and behaviours in the target population under consideration by the EPA. The plan would be to conduct an experiment online with a large, representative sample of the target population (c. 800-1,000), depending on the design of the study.
