Project Abstract

Living biomass is fundamental to the carbon cycle of peatlands. In Ireland, the peatland carbon stock is estimated at 1071 Mt. Disturbance of vegetation (whether by anthropogenic influences or climate change) will potentially change peatland carbon balance and influence the sustainable use of the resource. Remote sensing technology can be used to monitor, assess and quantify change in peatland vegetation over time, and is particularly appropriate for the task due to the remoteness and extent of many peatland areas. This project will develop remote sensing tools for monitoring peatland vegetation disturbance (primarily anthropogenic) using multiple data sources (Landsat TM, SPOT, MODIS, etc), cross-validation and ground truthing with ground based sensors and physical sampling. It will develop a protocol for implementing routine monitoring of Irish peatland vegetation.
