Project Abstract

The management of socio-technical transitions aims to redirect and steer a wide range of factors (markets, infrastructure, governance, individual behaviour) towards a more sustainable configuration, over the long-term. This project seeks to develop an analytical framework for directing and integrating research on the low carbon transition in Ireland. It will do this by following a methodology of systematic review, international benchmarking and case study analysis, organised through ten work packages, delivered over 18 months. This will specifically consist of three systematic reviews of: theoretical framings of societal-wide transitions; international case studies of sustainability transitions; and barriers/incentives/indicators for transition for selected technologies in an Irish context. It will also include a case study of a selected technology, building on previous undertaken by SEAI and NESC. This will lead to benchmarking of Ireland's transition compared to other international examples and a synthesis of the research into an overall analytical framework for catalysing and characterising transition in Ireland.
