Project Abstract

The aim of this project is to use new state-of-the-art instrumentation to determine the chemical composition and sources of SOA in the atmosphere. A detailed programme of laboratory experiments will be conducted to characterise SOA produced from the most important organic compounds. The experiments will be performed under controlled conditions in a new custom-built atmospheric simulation chamber facility to enable identification of molecular markers for SOA in ambient aerosols. Subsequent field measurements will be made at an urban background location during summer and winter periods to assess the contribution of SOA from both natural and man-made sources. This project will be the first detailed study of the molecular composition of organic aerosol in Ireland and will provide valuable source-specific information that can be used to support development of effective strategies for reducing aerosol emissions.
