Project Abstract

The goal of the proposed research is to simulate the effects of climate change on both a global and Irish regional level. The first component of the proposed research will involve tuning and testing the latest version of the EC-Earth Earth System Model in preparation for the upcoming Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase6 (CMIP6) contributions. Once the testing phase is complete, the PI will commit to running a number of CMIP6 EC-Earth production runs. CMIP6 will provide a framework for coordinated climate change experiments for the next number of years and will include simulations for assessment in the expected U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) AR6 reports. A second component of the research will simulate climate change in Ireland at high spatial resolution using Regional Climate Models. The work will form the basis of a planned 2016 ICHEC RCM project. The research will consolidate and greatly expand on previous research carried out by the proposed PI. This previous research shows large uncertainty in certain climate projections for Ireland such as annual precipitation and annual wind speeds. It is envisaged that the proposed research will reduce this uncertainty and provide sharper estimates of expected climate change in the coming decades.
