Project Abstract

The objective of this project for Ireland to provide a lead in the implementation of SDGs in the context of adopting a �whole-of-Government� approach to implementing the SDGs. The project specifically addresses SDG target 17.14 to �enhance policy coherence for sustainable development� that reflects the reality that transforming societies and realising the SDGs as a multidimensional challenge. Such analysis can allow the interpretation of SDGs in the context of national priorities and circumstances to facilitate integration of sustainability goals with those of social and economic development. A literature review and policy analysis will identify the linkages between each of the SDGs and their targets and how these can act as barriers to SDG implementation across government. In partnership with ICSU and other international expert organisations the project will (i) Advance understanding of the importance of interaction analysis and its relevance to SDG implementation, priority-setting, monitoring for Ireland; (ii) Provide a toolkit and process for practical and contextualized interaction mapping and prioritization so as to assist evidence-informed policy development and implementation in national policy development; and (iii) Promote interactions between key stakeholders including scientists and policy makers to advance the SDGs. The main outputs from this project will be: � A comprehensive review of interactions between SDGs and their targets specifically in the context of SDG implementation in Ireland. � Development of a tool (including online) for exploring SDG interactions co-designed with international expertise and co-produced with relevant stakeholders through application testing. � A Guidance document addressing SDG interactions in the context of Ireland. � Improved awareness amongst stakeholders of the implications of SDG interactions for implementation of SDGs by their responsible Government departments. � Increased awareness of the consequences of SDG interactions in Ireland to provide transparency and accountability within the system, providing information for stakeholders and policy makers alike. � Presentation of at least 1 paper at an international conference paper and 1 peer-reviewed journal paper to further highlight national research on the international stage.
