Project Abstract

Liquid Crystal Displays are used in applications ranging from small displays on machines up to 100 inch TV screens. It is anticipated that the global LCD-sales figures will rise by 54% each year up to 2009 when the sales value will be almost 80,000 million. Due to this upsurge of LCD manufacture a method of preventing these appliances of reaching landfill needs to be developed. This proposal aims to limit the amount of LCD?s going to landfill by:? Developing a new technique for separation of the different components of the LCD?s? A method of sorting these components to enable higher value materials be recycled easier Outputs include transferable technologies such as (a)methods to re-qualify LCDs for re-use and (b)recycling of LCD components/materials. These new methods will enable a major reduction in the amount of waste LCD?s going to landfill. It is anticipated that a patent will be established to insure technology is utilised in an Irish setting. The key method for the technology dissemination will be the formation of a steering group. Companies involved in the production, repair and recycling of LCDs will be invited.Dissemination strategies include: ? peer-reviewed international journals. ? interactive website (this website will also be a contact point for interested parties in the technology).
