Project Abstract

To date, there has been a lack of scholarly research into media coverage of climate change in Ireland. This coupled with declining level of media engagement puts pressure on the crucial aim to educate and engage publics on the major global crisis of our time. This proposal recognises the theoretical shift from a linear diffusion model to a more interpretative, dialogic approach and role of the image in public meaning-making. We acknowledge that media coverage of climate change is a social relationship between scientists, policy actors and the public that is mediated by such news packages. In this proposal, we will provide a single study that speaks to the various frames being utilised, to the dynamics of journalistic norms and crucially, to how these engage citizens and policy-makers. This proposed project provides not only the first comprehensive account of media engagement in Ireland on climate change but the first big data exercise of searchable talk combining newspaper, websites, blogs, broadcast and social media including Facebook, and Twitter. We will look at historical trends across various media platforms. The analytical, mixed methods approach will look at sentiment, imagery, timing, language and engagement. Major outputs will include media and policy action guidelines.
