Project Abstract

The proposed research will include a review of international best practice and relevant examples of just transition, specifically those relating to fossil fuel extraction and energy generation. The primary research will apply qualitative methods (semi-structured interviews, focus groups) and will begin by learning of the concerns and ideas for future use from BnM workers and families directly affected by cessation. Lough Boora Discovery Park is often depicted as a model example of industrial bogland after-use. A case study will inquire into how its transition was handled following the ending of peat production at the site in the 1980s. What lessons can be learned from this example when considering the wider transition ahead? To this end, the researcher will examine Bord na Monas company archives and interview current and former managers and employees.
