Project Abstract

This project will measure variability and emission factors for greenhouse gases (GHG; N2O, CH4 and CO2) from major land-uses in Ireland contributing to national inventory (Tier 2 and 3). The ecosystem model DAYCENT, a proven cost-effective method, will be validated/improved to simulate GHGs and biomass/crop production. Biochar, a by-product through pyrolysis of biomass/energy crops, biogeochemistry in soils and its interactions with decomposing organic materials and nitrogenous fertilisers will be examined. Application of biochar in association with inorganic and organic fertilizers will be investigated as a novel approach to mitigate GHGs and to sequester carbon in soils under different land managements.
