Climate change caused by enhanced atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) is a major threat for the global environment and socio-economic systems. The International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has clearly outlined these issues, including the adverse effects of climate change. The options to address these include the technology of carbon capture and storage (Metz et al., 2005). International action is required to address climate change, including actions to limit or eliminate emissions of CO2 from energy generation. Internationally these efforts are being progressed under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol.

The primary objective of this project is to assess the potential for geological storage of CO2 in hypothetical deep saline aquifers in the vicinity of Moneypoint, Co. Clare, through provision of a synthesis and interpretation of both existing and newly acquired data.
