Authorisation processes explained 

Uisce Éireann is required to apply for a Waste Water Discharge Licence for any agglomeration with a population equivalent of over 500.  

For agglomerations with a population equivalent of less than 500, Uisce Éireann is required to apply for a certificate of authorisation. 

Discharges to surface water bodies from small wastewater treatment systems serving housing developments with a population equivalent of less than or equal to 150 require registration with the EPA.
