Guidance on the Safe Storage of Lithium-Ion Batteries at Waste Handling Facilities

Summary: With the increased use of Lithium-ion batteries in Ireland in recent years, there has been an associated increase in Lithium-ion battery waste. If batteries become damaged or begin to fail, there is a significant risk of fire and release of hazardous substances. In response, the EPA has published Guidance on the Safe Storage of Lithium-Ion Batteries at Waste Handling Facilities. The guidance will be of interest to Operators of Civic Amenity Sites, Waste Management Facilities, as well as Retailers. The guidance is one of a series of actions under the National Hazardous Waste Management Plan.
