EPA Prosecutes a County Cavan Pig Farmer (P0924-01)

Hearing Date: April 13, 2026

On 21st October 2025 a County Cavan Pig Farmer pleaded guilty to four charges of breaching conditions of his Industrial Emissions Licence – P0924-01.  Details of the charges are set out below.

On that date, the court heard evidence as to the nature and circumstances of the offences and a plea in mitigation was made on behalf of the defendant.  The case was adjourned to afford Judge Cronin the opportunity to consider the matter of costs. 

The sentencing of the case took place on the 13th April 2026 at Cavan District Court.  Judge Cronin convicted the Pig Farmer on the following charges and imposed a fine of €2,000 on each charge. 

  • Failing on or about the 21st of May 2023 to comply with the provisions of Condition 6.8.5, in that there was an unauthorised discharge of polluting matter at stormwater discharge point SW-1 to water, namely the Dromore River. 
  • Failing on or about the 2nd of September 2023 to comply with the provisions of Condition 6.8.5, in that there was an unauthorised discharge of polluting matter at stormwater discharge point SW-1 to water, namely the Dromore River. 

The following charges were taken into consideration by Judge Cronin:

  • Failing on or about the 22nd of May 2023 to comply with the provisions of Condition 6.8.5, in that there was an unauthorised discharge of polluting matter at stormwater discharge point SW-1 to water, namely the Dromore River.
  • Failing on or about the 21st of May 2023 to comply with the provisions of Condition 5.2, in that polluting matter was discharged to the surface water drainage system at the licensed installation. 

A contribution towards the Agency’s costs were also agreed.
