Product Certification 

Product certification is provided by the EPA to confirm that the level of radioactivity in Irish food or other produce is below the limits required by an importing country. This may involve measuring the sample in question by gamma spectrometry for the routine parameters caesium-134 and caesium-137 (gamma spectrometry standard). Other gamma emitters can be detected by a longer gamma test, and this is reflected in its higher price (gamma spectrometry complex). Exporters of food and drink products may need this documentation, officially called a Certificate of Radioactivity Measurement, when exporting their goods.

Why is there demand for certificates which show the radioactivity content of Irish foods?

Despite the extremely low levels of radioactivity found in Irish produce, there is a continuing demand from several importing countries for this type of certification. This was initiated after the 1986 Chornobyl accident and has continued to this day.
