EPA Research Programme: Funding and resources

Funding mechanisms

The Environmental Protection Agency provides funding to support science, technology, research and innovation projects through grant-aid to third level institutions, state agencies, government departments, local and regional authorities, the private sector and individuals. Proposals are invited periodically through calls advertised in the national press and on this website. 

• Project-Based Awards: There is currently no open call for proposals
• Researcher-Based Awards (Masters, PhDs, Fellowships): There is currently no open call for proposals.
• Event Support (including Workshops & Conferences)
• Researcher Travel Support Grants (RTSG) scheme

Project Types

The different types of projects funded through the programme are shown below:

Project-based Awards

• Capability Development
  • Duration: 48-60 months
  • Typical Funding: in excess of  €1,000,000
• Large-Scale
  • Duration: 36-48 months
  • Typical Funding: up to €1,000,000
• Medium-Scale
  • Duration: 24-36 months
  • Typical Funding: up to €350,000
• Desk-Study
  • Duration: 6-12 months
  • Typical Funding: up to €100,000

Researcher-based Awards

• Masters scholarships
  • Duration: ~24 months
  • Typical Funding: up to €40,000
• Doctoral scholarships
  • Duration: ~36 months
  • Typical Funding: up to €95,000 (Doctoral Scholarship budget includes provision for €5,000 toward 4th year fees if required)
• Research fellowships
  • Duration: 24 – 36 months
  • Typical Funding: up to €350,000

Proposals received in response to a call are evaluated by experts from within and outside Ireland and awards are made based on their recommendations with regard to national environmental priorities and the need to maintain a balance of support across research topics.
