Drinking water audits

The EPA carries out audits at water treatment plants:

  • To ensure that public water supplies comply with the Drinking Water Regulations
  • In response to drinking water quality failures or incidents
  • To check that remedial actions have been carried out by Irish Water
  • As spot checks on supplies that have not had any water quality failures

During an audit the EPA Inspector may look at some or all aspects of a water supply, including:

  • Protection of the water source
  • Treatment processes
  • Treatment capacity
  • Storage of treated water
  • Distribution network

The EPA issues an audit report to Irish Water following each audit, setting out its findings and recommendations.
