EPA Prosecutes Uisce Éireann – Macroom (D0126-01)

Hearing Date: September 29, 2025

On 29th September 2025 at Dublin Metropolitan District Court, the Environmental Protection Agency prosecuted Uisce Éireann for breaches of its Waste Water Discharge Licence D0126-01 (Macroom, County Cork).

Uisce Éireann pleaded guilty to breaches of conditions by:

  • Failing on or about the 11th of January 2024 to comply with the provisions of Condition 3.3, in that there was a discharge from the waste water works which exceeded the emission limit value for Ammonia (as N) as set out in Schedule A: Discharges and Discharge Monitoring of the said licence. 
  • Failing on or about the 6th of March 2024 to comply with the provisions of Condition 3.3, in that there was a discharge from the waste water works which exceeded the emission limit value for Ammonia (as N) as set out in Schedule A: Discharges and Discharge Monitoring of the said licence. 
  • Failing on or about the 4th of April 2024 to comply with the provisions of Condition 3.3, in that there was a discharge from the waste water works which exceeded the emission limit value for Ammonia (as N) as set out in Schedule A: Discharges and Discharge Monitoring of the said licence. 
  • Failing on or about the 15th of May 2024 to comply with the provisions of Condition 3.3, in that there was a discharge from the waste water works which exceeded the emission limit value for Ammonia (as N) as set out in Schedule A: Discharges and Discharge Monitoring of the said licence.  
  • Failing on or about the 1st of May 2024 to comply with the provisions of Condition 4.9, in that they failed to take corrective action as soon as practicable, namely the repair of the inlet screen which ceased operation on the 31st day of January 2024. 

Judge Halpin convicted Uisce Éireann on all charges and imposed fines totalling €10,000.  Agency costs were also agreed.
