There are increased recognition and awareness of the problems associated with blooms of harmful cyanobacteria worldwide. A variety of biological, biochemical and analytical methods are available for the detection, identification and quantification of several toxins produced by cyanobacteria. In recent years, new knowledge on toxic species has been obtained through advances in molecular and computational biology. Attempts at elucidating the genetically based regulation of toxin synthesis are also currently ongoing. Several research needs have been identified so as to facilitate the sustainable management of water resources at the watershed level and the monitoring of cyanobacteria populations. Future developments will partly focus on acquiring high sample throughput analysis and remote sensing capacities, along with bio-physical models of bloom occurrences.
